Indigenous Languages, Culture, and Community

The Wordspring
Initiative

The Wordspring Initiative is a nonprofit dedicated to the preservation of Indigenous languages and to the cultural and educational programs that sustain them. We work in partnership with Indigenous communities to develop translation tools, learning resources, and cultural programming designed around their priorities.

What We Do

Language, culture,
and community.

01

Language and technology

The Wordspring Initiative develops translation tools, digital learning materials, and other software designed to give Indigenous languages a working presence in the digital environments where modern communication takes place. Our technology is built in collaboration with the communities whose languages it serves and is designed for direct use by speakers, learners, teachers, and families.

02

Culture and the arts

The Wordspring Initiative supports Indigenous cultural and artistic work through partnerships with artists, storytellers, educators, and community organizations. This area of our work spans literature, the visual arts, exhibitions, and public programming, with the specific projects shaped in collaboration with the communities and partners involved.

03

Community empowerment

We work to strengthen Indigenous communities through educational workshops, teacher training resources, and direct support for community-led language and cultural initiatives. Decisions regarding how a community's language and cultural materials are used remain with the community itself, and we operate as collaborators in that work.

Language carries the soul of a people.
